New feature: Julia Payne in CEO Monthly on building for the next stage of growth

Growth creates a difficult transition for founders and CEOs.

The instincts, personal involvement and speed that helped build the business can eventually become constraints. As the organisation grows, there are simply too many customers, decisions and priorities for everything to continue relying on one person.

In my latest article for CEO Monthly, I look at five questions leadership teams should be asking if they want to move beyond founder-led momentum and build sustainable growth.

Growth needs direction, not simply more activity

“Grow the business” sounds like a strategy. It isn’t.

Leadership teams need to decide what kind of growth they are actually trying to create, which customers and markets matter, and where the next stage of revenue will come from.

That also means deciding what not to pursue.

Without those choices, businesses can easily end up reacting to whichever opportunity appears next, adding more leads, people or investment without addressing the underlying constraints in the growth system.

Better boardroom questions lead to better growth decisions

The article looks at five questions:

  • What are we actually trying to build?
  • Where will the next stage of growth come from?
  • What do we know about our customers, and what are we merely assuming?
  • Are we using AI to build advantage, or accelerating the wrong work?
  • Are we creating capacity for the future, or consuming all of it?

They are deliberately bigger than marketing questions.

They force leadership teams to connect strategy, customer insight, technology, people and operating capacity rather than optimising each function in isolation.

AI cannot compensate for weak foundations

The same principle applies to AI.

Starting with “Where can we use AI?” risks automating the wrong work faster.

If positioning is weak, automating content does not fix it. If targeting is wrong, faster prospecting simply reaches more of the wrong customers. Technology creates leverage when the underlying commercial system is sound.

The boardroom question should therefore be about the commercial or customer problem AI is expected to solve and whether the foundations are strong enough for it to create meaningful value.

The next stage of growth rarely comes from asking people to work harder.

It comes from making clearer strategic choices, protecting capacity for the future and building a leadership team and operating system that can make good decisions without everything depending on the founder.

Build a revenue system that does not depend on founder intervention

If growth still depends on the founder connecting marketing, sales and customer success, the business does not simply need more activity.

It needs a stronger operating system.

Julia’s Scaling Smart guide to RevOps and GTM alignment explains how growing B2B companies can introduce clearer ownership, cleaner data, stronger handovers and more predictable revenue processes.

Let's have a conversation.

If you're considering any of the ways we could work together, the best place to start is a straightforward conversation. No pitch. No pressure. Just an honest discussion about where the business is today, what you're trying to achieve and whether I can help.
